CPM has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the University of Stellenbosch for a long time, and we were delighted to once again be part of their annual student jewellery competition by sponsoring silver granules for the runners up in each year.
Silicone and rubber moulds may seem pretty hardwearing, but there is a proper way to use, care for and store these jewellery studio assets that will prolong their lifespan and save you cost. First off: let’s get clear on the different kinds of mould making materials. There are three primary categories: natural rubber, vulcanising silicone rubber (VSR), and two part silicones (a non-shrinking, no-heat option). Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and as a result, each may be the best choice in certain situations. The key to choosing between them is to understand the properties of all three, and then decide which to use based on what qualities are most important for a given situation.
Though they certainly felt like hell to get through, lockdowns and the coronavirus global outbreak have generally had a positive effect on the jewellery trade. In early 2022, the personal luxury and diamond jewellery markets were reported to be showing a decade-high growth of 35% and 29% respectively. While part of this surge was attributed to the savings some salaried people had accumulated when lockdowns prevented leisure activities and travel, consumer behaviour overall has been fundamentally changed, with experience and emotion-based purchases rising in popularity.
Three employees from our Gauteng branch and a CPM KZN team member were recently evaluated according to the Jewellery Council of South Africa’s Professional Technical Skills Test Guidelines. All four passed with flying colours, bringing our collective total company-wide to 43 Certificates!
