CPM has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the University of Stellenbosch for a long time, and we were delighted to once again be part of their annual student jewellery competition by sponsoring silver granules for the runners up in each year.
The young designers from the University’s Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division produced fantastic work in line with what we’ve all come to expect from this institution. Their focus is on educating jewellery design as a critical discipline that allows students to reflect on their surroundings, translating their ideas effectively into three-dimensional wearable artworks that communicate and stimulate thought.

This year’s brief was titled “Slow Intimacy” and the exceptional young artisans to be awarded prizes in 2022 were:
- 1st year first place: Thara Allie for her “Controversy” neckpiece
- 1st year second place: Leah Brugge van Niekerk for her “Growth” neckpiece
- 2ndyear first place: Nicolene du Plessis for her untitled earrings
- 2ndyear second place: Lani van der Walt for her untitled neckpiece
- 3rdyear first place: Chelsea Gevers for her “Hot Cross Bun” piece
- 3rdyear second place: Eloise Retief for her “My Little Friend from Long Ago” brooch
- 4thyear first place: Anika Lotter for her “Undesolated” piece
- 4thyear second place: Chandra Ngomane for her “Healing my narrative memory” brooch

The awards were held on the 18th of October at GUS – Stellenbosch University’s contemporary exhibitions space, which is programmed and managed by members of the university’s Visual Arts department. This handsome old church has been beautifully converted into a gallery and provides a critical platform for both experimentation and professional experience amongst the student body.
