How to provide safe piercing services during COVID-19

Piercing article header

Piercing can be a welcome income source for your store, but do be mindful of the associated risks presented by coronavirus transmission. A person who is infected but asymptomatic may also have a compromised immune system, so all clients need to take extra care of the post-piercing wound. A few key points to note:

  • Both the piercer and client must wear masks and both must sanitise their hands before and after piercing. The piercer can also opt to use single-use gloves.
  • The piercer should sanitise the piercing counter/surface and chair before and after every ear piercing.
  • Be extremely careful to avoid piercing the mask strap when using the gun. One of our suppliers allows their clients to remove the ear elastics and secure the mask over their mouth using their hands so that the elastics are not pierced.
  • Clients should be advised to avoid touching their ears and face after the piercing.
  • Advise your client not to take aspirin or anything with aspirin in it as a precursory pain prevention measure, as this can cause them to bleed more than normal.
  • Piercing may not be a good idea for pregnant clients because of the risk of getting an infection.
  • Ensure your staff get your indemnity / release forms signed beforehand.
  • Have a policy in place and inform your staff about any possible minimum age requirements for piercings at your store.
  • Only use hypoallergenic jewellery like our Steri Stud range
  • Advise your client on proper aftercare for the sake of their health and your reputation.

We stock Medisept after care gel – a fantastic antiseptic that assists your clients to avoid infections after piercing. See more info on post-piercing care here
